House Paint Color New Farmers Branch Controversy
New Accusations Of Racism As Residents Ask To Regulate Colors Of Home Exteriors
by Steve Pickett
FARMERS BRANCH (CBS 11 News) ―
Two Farmers Branch residents want the city council to regulate the colors that homeowners may paint their houses.
Some say the bright colors that are popping up on more and more houses in the city detract from the property values of other homes in the neighborhood. Others say it smacks of racism, because many of those who coat their houses in the bright yellows, blues, reds and greens are Hispanic.
Del Wentworth lives in Farmers Branch. This morning we found him painting his fence with a cedar stainjust the color he wanted it. He says that's the way it should be. "I should be able to paint it any color I like," he told us.
Alma Sugura also lives in the Dallas County city. She agrees with Wentworth. "I think it's ridiculous," she said of the proposal. "This is so sad. It's very sad, very ridiculous
I can't believe that. Race is what it's all about."
Wylene Brannon has lived in her Farmers Branch neighborhood for 50 years. She says the problem is one of tolerance. "What they're bringing in is their culture," she said. "And that's where we have got to some way, besides 'you can't do this, you can't do that,' is get together."
Farmers Branch city officials told us they are looking at the requests and talking to the city attorney, but right now are not planning any formal action.
