New Carrollton Mayor Creating Immigration Policies

CARROLLTON (CBS 11 News) ― Carrollton's newly elected mayor Ron Branson says he wants to compare notes with area suburbs to create anti-illegal immigration legislation. Branson says he will talk to a variety of people before taking action.

The federal government recently approved jailers in the city to eventually look up federal immigration records to determine whether those in the city are here illegally.

In nearby Irving, critics have protested the city's policy of notifying federal immigration officials when they arrest suspects believed to be here illegally.

Branson says he will also learn from the mistakes made in Farmers Branch. Tim O'Hare, the city's newly elected mayor, pushed efforts to pass an ordinance to ban apartment complexes in Farmers Branch from leasing to illegal immigrants.

The ordinance hasn't gone into effect because critics filed a federal lawsuit in Dallas. A federal judge has delayed the ordinance until after the case has gone to trial.

Dallas attorney Domingo Garcia, who filed one of three lawsuits against Farmer's Branch, says he'll be watching the City of Carrollton closely. Mayor-elect O'Hare says he's prepared to take the case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court if necessary.
